Sam Harris is a published neuroscientist and author. His books focus on spirituality without religion, meditation, and general philosophy—without the New Age bullshit.He is a strong rationalist and is commonly associated with the “Intellectual Darkweb”. In his podcast, he usually interviews renowned journalists, authors and scientists about their recent books or their work in general. He doesn’t shy away from controversial topics and is just such a good conversationalist, that almost every episode is deeply interesting on a level that is hard to compare with anything else.

Dan Carlin can’t keep it short. He loves history and loves to talk about it. And he is damn good at it. In great lengths and to meticulous detail he retells many facets of world history. Don’t be intimidated by the exhaustingly long playtime of the episodes: it’s worth every second! (Also he speaks very slowly and I listen with trimmed silence and 1.3× playback speed) Instead of boring you with an chain of mere historical facts he tries to convey what the people—leaders and workers alike—must have felt like. He spices his account up with quotes from news paper articles, letters and speeches from the time and really makes the past come alive through his words. This show is pure art and got my fascination for history back up again. If just history class in High School would’ve been this thrilling. While the most recent episodes are free, I bought all the classic episodes as well and can definitely recommend it!

Sabine Rückert ist Journalistin für Verbrechen bei der ZEIT und erzählt hier spannende Fälle nach. Dabei geht es zwar oft um Gewaltverbrechen, allerdings nicht ausschließlich. Auch Trickbetrügereien und politische Taten oder Staatsversagen sind Thema. Generell sind die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Realitäten, in deren Kontext ein Verbrechen stattfindet sehr wichtig in diesem Podcast, der zu vielen Teilen auch Gesellschafts und Rechtssystemkritik übt. Es wird versucht gerade die persönlichen Seiten der Opfer und auch der Täter zu beleuchten. Die Art und Weise wie Sabine Rückert hier diese Taten und Zusammenhänge schildert ist absolut packend und bildhaft. Einer der wenigen Podcasts, bei denen ich sofort jede neue Episode höre!

Mit einer der ersten Podcasts die ich hörte und definitiv derjenige der mich für das Medium begeistert hat. Der Moderator interviewt einen Experten zu einem Thema so lange, bis auch wirklich das letzte Detail geklärt ist. Es werden sowohl sehr teschnische als auch kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Themen behandelt.

S-Town means Shit-Town. This is a story about a man from rural Alabama and the town he lives in. I will not even try to describe what kind of a story it is, because you just can’t. But when This American Life and Serial team up to release a seven chapter story you simply have to listen to it. And it’s worth it. Deeply touching and also a disturbing inside into the society of rural southern USA. After you’ve listend to the whole story, you should definitely check out this Longform interview with the creator.

The Heart talks all things love and sex. Clearly feminist and sex-positive they shed light into a topic not-so-often-discussed in public in a very inclusive way. It often features mini seasons with a hand full of episodes about one topic. What I can really recommend is the “One-day’s love” mini series about romantic encounters that don’t need to last forever to be beautiful.

In this show the dark side of human nature is dissected from all angles. There’s stories told by criminals, victims and prosecution officials who all have their own views on criminal activity, it’s motivations and problems.

Having started as off spring from the This American Life family, Serial features the same excessive amount of work put into each episode. Sarah Koenig and her team tell one story per season, week by week as they are figuring it out themselves. This leads to a way of storytelling full of surprises and suspense. I recommend the first season about a ambiguous murder case more than ten years ago.

„Erzählungen aus einem Leben inmitten von Frühstücksblech und Affen, Kokarausch und Wahn, Beschaffungskriminalität und Drogendeals, Knastschlägerei und Flucht.“ „Sick“ erzählt in 380 Folgen detailliert seine packende Lebensgeschichte. Als Jugendlicher ist er an Heroin geraten und nicht mehr davon losgekommen. Danach folgte der Abrutsch Kriminalität und Obdachlosigkeit. Die Geschichte ist so krass und fesselnd, dass man es nicht mehr aus der Hand legen kann. Es gibt so viele Wendungen, dass ich hier gar nicht zu viel sagen will. Nur: Die zweite Hälfte ist eigentlich noch besser als die erste, auch wenn man es nicht glauben kann. Die Erzählung ist wunderbar strukturiert, packend vorgetragen und einfach total spannend.

A Life Well Wasted is a podcast around video gaming culture. Beyond everything it is overwhelmingly well produced and immerses you in the emotions it creates. Even though I’m not that much of a gamer I really really enjoyed this one. Unfortunately the update schedule is very loose and nothing has happened since 2013 and there are only seven episodes (as of 2016). But each and every one of them is a treasure.

This American Life is a stunning mixture of storytelling and journalism. As one of the most popular podcasts world wide they tell about three stories a week that are metaphorically connected. Topics include but not limited to american life and pop culture. Some stories are told as interviews, short stories or standup comed. Beautifully produced it is a all time classic.

Wissenschaftsautor und promovierter Astronom Florian Freistetter nimmt sich viel Zeit um in vielen kleinen Episoden mehr oder weniger alles über Astronomie anschaulich zu erklären.

In jeder Folge wird eine Spirituose oder eine Drinkkathegorie vorgestellt, geschichtlich beleuchtet und passende Cocktails vorgestellt—und getrunken. Das Team hat seine eigene Dynamik und einen lockeren Ton um ihre Liebe für’s trinken zu vermitteln. Ich habe dadurch viel über Trinkkultur gelernt und auch das ein oder andere Rezept aufgeschnappt. Dieser Podcast war mehr oder weniger mein Einstieg in die Welt der Spirituosen.
